Ana Free Sings Playgrounds and Kisses

Posted October 24th @ 7:22 am by Mary

This is an original song from this signer from Portugal who current lives in the United Kingdom. From her MySpace site:

I just finished up my degree in Economics (and now I’m trying to apply it to my music career – hehe :P ). For my final dissertation, I studied the economic theory of “the firm” and how it relates to the evolution of the major record labels. It’s more interesting than it sounds, I promise. :-)

On the music front, I’m currently recording my debut album – be sure to check the blog for updates! Thanks again for watching my YouTube videos and listening to my songs. Please download my songs and share them with your friends and let me know what they think! I’d love for you to email me, message me or leave me comments to let me know what you’re thinking and doing these days. I couldn’t do what I do without your help!

Susan Boyle Sings Rolling Stone’s “Wild Horses”

Posted September 28th @ 3:09 pm by Mary

Wild Horses was ranked 334 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time – in 2004. It was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and recorded by the Rolling Stones. Wild Horses will be the first single Susan releases and it will be on her album to be released in November, which is #2 on Amazon today (behind a new release from Barbra Streisand). Mick Jagger thinks that Susan Boyle’s version of “Wild Horses” is better than the Rolling Stones original.

Hollie Steel Is Recording Her First Album

Hollie Records First Album in Nelson

The 11-year-old Britain’s Got Talent star has spent the last fortnight holed up inside a studio, recording songs from musicals and operas. Hollie, who lives in Huncoat and grew up in Burnley, is hoping to launch an assault on the charts with a single in time for Christmas.

Members of Pendle’s Arden Youth Choir have lent their assistance on some of the more classical tracks.

“Hollie’s having a really good time doing what she’s doing and the songs sound really good. She’s enjoyed picking some of the songs herself. We’re trying to make it fun for her because she’s only a little girl. We would like to get into the charts. That’s the ultimate aim. No one is expecting a number one, but we hope it makes it into the charts.

I can’t wait to hear the results of her singing. Susan Boyle’s new CD continues to dominate the Amazon rankings (#1 today). Hopefully Hollie can have a successful first CD and grow from there to have many more.

Even more important though is that Hollie doesn’t try to take on too much too soon. Successful sales would be nice but there is no need to sell out to try and be a quick huge success. Many talented singers have long, successful, happy careers without being huge celebrity personalities.

Too often performers seem to compromise because they think they need to conform to expectations of those in the business, but that is often a big mistake. There are many options today that allow singers to be successful without giving into demands of record labels (which seem to often wring huge sales out of young singers and then leave behind broken and poor performers). If she keeps focused on making sure she has fun and grows up well we can look forward to many more enjoyable albums, I think.

Hopefully they will release a track online sometime soon, to give us something to listen to while we wait for the release of Hollie’s first CD.

Susan Boyle’s Debut Album Tops Amazon Sales Charts

Posted September 6th @ 9:24 am by Mary

Susan Boyle’s debut album, I Dreamed A Dream, will be released November 24th but already it tops Amazon’s music sales leaders on pre-release sales. The webcast shows her signing I Dreamed a Dream in the BGT Finals.

Following her on the chart is I Look to You by Whitney Houston and 5 of the next 6 leaders are remastered Beatles Albums (to be released Sept 9th): Abbey Road, The White Album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Revolver and Rubber Soul.

12th on the list is a great new release from They Might Be Giants: Here Comes Science.

Paul Potts, 2007 Britain’s Got Talent winner, holds the 47th spot with his new album Passione, which has been in the top 100 for 55 days. His debut album, One Chance, is in the 61st spot and has been in the top 100 for an amazing 316 days.

Wicked has been in the top 100 for 1,011 days – more than twice as long as the next longest. Watch Hollie’s visit to backstage of Wicked.

Hopefully we will see Hollie Steel’s debut album within the next year.

A Day with Hollie Steel and Family

Here is a nice post on a blogger and fan’s visit with Hollie and her family: Our Day with Hollie Steel and Family

Yesterday, my family and I went to visit Hollie, Josh, Nina and Jason Steel at their home in Huncoat.

Nina played me a version of Hollie singing Nessun Dorma that she is currently working on in a studio, and it was absolutely amazing. It would blow your socks off, I promise!

We didn’t just talk about Hollie singing though – we had a normal, fun time. My children, Sam and Tomson, are each a year older than Josh and Hollie, and they all got on well together, playing on the trampoline, making noises with the amplifier and generally doing what children do – with a few exceptions. For example, whilst I was playing a Nightwish track for the Jason and Nina (I think Hollie would be great singing some of the Nightwish songs that Tarja Turunen used to sing such as Ever Dream or Wishmaster), we could hear Josh playing the piano. Wow! Such an accomplished pianist, as is dad Jason. Josh will be entering Britain’s Got Talent next year, so let’s hope he gets through next time.

It really is great how the internet allows us to be able to share and connect in ways that were not practical years ago. The photo is from Mandy Boylett’s visit to Hollie’s house.

Hollie Jumps for Football

Hollie Steel knows Burnley have got talent!

Pubs and firms are dusting off their Burnley FC flags, as a host of towns look to become seas of claret and blue for their Premier League debut at Stoke.

Britain’s Got Talent finalist Hollie Steel, who grew up in Burnley, said she can barely contain her excitement as kick-off approaches.

“It is really great at the moment, the town centre is doing well and the promotion has really put a skip in everyone’s step.” Business has been booming in the club shop as fans prepare for Saturday’s away tie with Stoke City and the first home game against league champions Manchester United.

Lisa Merrifield, shop manager, said: “We’ve never seen anything like it – I’ve gone grey with stress. We’ve trebled our business and had to extend the shop.”

Burnley lost their first match to Stoke City but responded with a win against Manchester United in their next match.
